The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation invited us to participate in a yearly event called "innovation day." It is an event designed to showcase all of the amazing work at the foundation but also engage children and families in the process. We were invited to create our own science fair like booth designed to teach children empathy for others in need. Based on existing work at the foundation, I wrote a short story about Skarla, a young girl with stomach problems who gets scared of the doctor. We encouraged our participants to ask more about Skarla and design something to make her feel safe, informed or in control of her situation. The results were amazing from the adorable, thoughtful and silly to the medically sound and experience based we learned so much and left with full hearts.
